Science Museum of Virginia
Additions and Alterations
Richmond, VA

The Commonwealth of Virginia commissioned Daley + Jalboot Architects to convert this former train station into the new state science museum. Using the original structure, the last project of renowned architect John Russell Pope, and a registered National Historic Landmark, D+JA converted the Rotunda into the main exhibit hall. Adjacent to this space, the former train concourse was converted into additional display, lecture, and administrative spaces. A new addition houses the Museum’s Imax® theater and Planetarium, incorporating the first Digistar® Projection System in the United States. With its simple volumes and expressed dome, this addition quietly defers to the existing structures while relating to them in materials and form.
