Maple Glen Elementary School
Upper Dublin School District
Maple Glen Elementary School is designed to echo the gabled roof forms of the adjacent residential neighborhood and the scale of the interior is based on the 450 young students that enliven the school. Wide overhangs bring the building low to the ground, window bays at each classroom create intimate learning centers, and low sills provide "kids-eye" views of the surrounding landscaped courts. An enjoyable and important design element is the variation of volumes and scale of the public spaces within the school. This creates ever changing experiences for the students as they circulate from class to class. D+JA designed the school and its systems to accommodate future plans for an additional nine classrooms and an ultimate student population of 600. Critical to its success, the site development included coordinating with community groups and youth sports leagues.
